Decorative plate with embedded butterflies and heather in cast polyester made by Armand G. Winfield.  Winfield, a designer, teacher, inventor and innovator is considered a pioneer in the field of plastics.  Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Winfield invented the first inexpensive mass-producible acrylics embedding process in the mid 1940s.  He did precursory work that led to the electronic encapsulation industry, when he successfully embedded the Walkie- Talkie for the US War Department, rendering it unbreakable in combat.  He used the process in the medical, biological, museum, and design fields by embedding a variety of objects and specimens.
